Based on the haunting fact that there is no such thing as "away" because everything must go somewhere, the following two concepts explore circular design solutions to material waste.
1 The first is an umbrella that is made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials. What's special about the umbrella is not necessarily it's physical design, though being able to easily disassemble it for household recycling is pretty neat, but rather the Up, Up & Again program behind the umbrella that encourages consumers to return their tired or broken umbrellas in exchange for a "new" one. Returned umbrellas are made new again by being recycled into "new" umbrellas.
2 The second is a user and place specific design solution based on research at the Gulfstream Center for Design that showed occupants of the center were not participating and/or complying with requested recycling practices.
